So I was perusing GamePro.com a few weeks ago when I stumbled upon a fan's blog about StarCraft. Turns out eaglesix had never played StarCraft before and just recently picked up the Battlechest and wrote about his experience. I asked him if he'd be willing to share his blog on OMGStarCraft because I thought, hell, if his blog brought back great memories for me, than it'll probably bring back great memories for a lot of SC fans.
So here' eaglesix's blog. I'll share my memories after you read his and hopefully you'll have some of your own to share.
So, I was at my local Gamestop the other day and I saw the Starcraft Battlechest. I've heard only good things from this, so I decided to buy it (and at $20, its a good deal). I've only played this game once, and for about five minutes at best. I got home, and booted it up.I knew if I played multiplayer, I would be a HUGE noob, so I started the campaign. The controls were tight and I picked them up (hotkeys aside) very quickly. I really like the different personalities of the characters. Now I'm in the middle of the game, and I'm loving it. The storyline is very cool, and I like how the government is your enemy for a part (or the whole game, I haven't gotten far).
If you haven't played this game before, I highly recommend that you buy it now. Sure there are a lot of other RTS's out there (World in Conflict, Sins of a Solar Empire), but this one is one of the best. Sure, it's old, but TONS of people still play it.
It has a lot of replay value, with three different campaigns, multiplayer, and a map creator. I can't recommend this game any higher than the sky. Seriously. And, with Starcraft 2 around the corner, you could catch up on the story before then, I know I will.
Reading his blog brought back such awesome memories. I remember literally shopping for a computer game just like eaglesix did, not knowing what I wanted, just picking up whatever I thought was cool. I remember picking two games off the shelf, one was StarCraft and I can't remember the other one.
I had never heard of StarCraft but it looked good, the other one I had read reviews about and heard it was pretty good. I bought the one that wasn't StarCraft, but sure enough I got home and I hated it and regretted not getting SC.
So, I made my mother drive me back to the store right away (I was 13) and told the guy at the counter that it wouldn't run on my computer because my computer wasn't good enough. Some how he let me return it even though computer games couldn't be returned because of piracy. I knew exactly what I was going to get this time.
I remember installing StarCraft and thinking, "this is gonna be awesome." I remember the first time I saw the creep and thought "holy sh*t, what is that!?" I remember sitting down at my computer and playing for hours to the point the old-ass glass monitor would hurt my eyes and my mother would yell at me for skipping dinner. To this day when I tell my mother what Web site I write for she says, "is that that game you were obsessed with?" I still get a kick out of it.
What a truly awesome game. I think that StarCraft 2 not only has the challenge of living up to technically being a better game than the original in terms of gameplay, but it has the challenge of living up to all those fantastic memories we have. Creating better gameplay is something that can be done...creating better memories I'm not as sure about.
If you have a great story or memory about StarCraft that you'd like to share with the GamePro community on OMGStarCraft let me know. You can friend me on GamePro.com and private message me or you can email me at scott.pytlik@gmail.com.
